BatesNumbering.app looks for Social Security, account, routing and card numbers anywhere in your PDFs, including ones nobody marked, removes the ones you choose (keeping the last four digits if you want), Bates-numbers every page across the files, and writes an index with each file's SHA-256. It runs in your browser; the files are not uploaded. The first 10 pages are free; a set of up to 1,000 pages is $29 once, with 24 hours of re-runs. No account.

How it works

  1. Choose the PDFs. Bank statements, pay stubs, tax returns, medical records, emails: the whole set. They are read in your browser.
  2. Review what it found. Social Security and tax ID numbers (dashed, undashed, spaced, split across lines), account, routing (checksum) and card numbers (Luhn check), IBANs, dates of birth beside a label, emails, phone numbers, driver's licence and passport numbers, text still under black boxes, and what sits in comments, form fields and metadata. Untick anything that should stay, add names, draw boxes.
  3. Keep the last four if you want. FRCP 5.2 and many state rules allow the last four digits of a Social Security or account number, and the year of a date of birth, in court filings. One switch does it.
  4. Bates-number the set. Prefix, first number, digits and corner, running on across every file in the order you choose, with an optional label such as CONFIDENTIAL.
  5. Get the set and the index. Pages with a redaction are turned into images with the box painted in, so the text under it is gone; the other pages keep their text. Metadata, comments, form fields, attachments and bookmarks are removed. Every finished file is read back before you can save it, and the index lists each file's Bates range, page count and SHA-256 as a PDF and a CSV.

Only want to know what is still in a PDF? The free leak check reads any PDF and lists every number it finds, including text under boxes that did not remove it.

What it is and is not

It is software that runs in your browser. It looks for the number patterns listed above and shows you every one it finds; you decide what is removed. It does not read pictures or scanned pages (they are listed as not checked), it does not find names you have not added, and it does not decide what you must redact or produce. Review every page before you send it. It is not a law firm and nothing on this site is legal advice. If you are unsure what a rule or an order in your case requires, ask a lawyer or your court's self-help center.
